I wanted to share how we made this simple yet adorable copper planter! A couple weeks ago was strawberry season, and we went on a day date to pick strawberries together, we LOVE strawberries! On the way home, (a whole 5 minute drive, LOL), I said to my hubby that I wanted to make a strawberry patch! We already had our garden planted and growing (if you want to see how we made our garden beds, click here), and strawberries spread quickly, so we decided on halved wine barrels so they could be contained, but look pretty too. It was a little late in the season to be planting them, but I didn’t care! Then before we bought the barrels, I came across a article in Southern Living Magazine April 2016 edition, to spray paint a metal tub into a DIY Copper Planter, and we liked that idea better, and it was cheaper! The halved wine barrels at Lowes/Home Depot were $39.99, and the tub was $19.99 + $6 for the Hammered Copper Spray paint.
So we went and picked up one for now, to see how it tuned out, and we love it! We have a lot of copper accents throughout our home so this was a great fit for us and our budget!
All you need to make the DIY Copper Planter is;
Rustoleum Hammered Copper Spray Paint
Behrens Galvanized Steel Tub -(15 gallon is what we used)
First I taped the edges that I wanted to remain the silver color!
Next I drilled a couple holes in the bottom for proper drainage.
Next I sprayed the first layer of copper paint, about 1 foot away from the surface so it wouldn’t puddle.
Waited about 20 minutes then sprayed the next layer. It was a hot day so I knew it would dry fast.
About a half hour later I removed all the tape, filled my tub with dirt and planted my strawberries!
We plan to get a couple more of these and do another strawberry one, and maybe some blueberry or raspberry ones too!
The fur-kids say hello and thanks for reading their mommies blog!
I should be doing a garden update soon, so keep an eye out for that! Mahalo!
