Where We Left Off
So since my last blog post where I shared all the demolition and labor we put into the bathroom, we have filled in drywall, continued sanding the floors, and getting that gunk off, then smoothing them out. We were so surprised we were able to salvage what we did with the wood floors! I know a lot of y’all were cringing and thinking it wasn’t going to happen, but they look amazing now! So worth the effort and money saved! After we got them stained and sealed, it was time to paint! Next, our plumber was to connect all the new supply lines and drains. We were not moving any plumbing, just changing out the old with our new oil rubbed bronze fixtures, etc. Well, we had a hiccup there because the plumber we intended to hire, was taking a 3-week vacation! BOOO! But luckily one of my clients I have refinished furniture for is a contractor, so I reached out to him, and we worked out a trade since they needed more furniture repainted, perfect!! Travis, owner of Heart Pine Homes did an amazing job and we can’t thank him enough for helping us out last minute. We have a million more projects in the house, and we will be calling him for help for sure from now on!
Let the Fun Stuff Begin
After that is was smooth sailing! Everything was back in place, we finished up minor details like caulk, floor molding, and outlet covers, and then it was time to decorate! My whole inspiration behind what I chose for the bathroom decor and why all stemmed from what would: #1 match the era of the house, and #2 be functional and decorative at the same time since it is a smaller bathroom. I did give two teaser photos on Instagram and Facebook, if you don’t follow me yet, please do! That is where I share the most pictures and info, and sometimes I don’t share the same things on both, so if you want every detail of what were working on, follow both!
Decorating
So I wanted the majority of everything to be white, which you can see on the walls, tub, toilet, sink, curtains, and handles on the faucets, so it would be crisp and clean and feel bigger also. My go to white paint color is “Dove White” from Valspar, I use it on all my molding and furniture in the house, it is a creamy white, not white-white! The oil rubbed bronze is what I chose for all the metal finishes, so we purchased an entire new clawfoot tub shower kit, (most expensive part of the entire renovation), painted the tub feet to match, as well as the light fixtures, sink faucet, towel and toilet paper holders, door knobs, candle holder, and toilet handle. I really wanted to tie in glass since we have glass doorknobs in the house, so I brought in a similar knob for the sink cabinet door, the glass antique sconce above the vanity, and also the glass shades in the light fixture. I also wanted lots of lace! For the period of our home, I thought lace would be appropriate and also be light and airy, dainty, and pretty, and I am so glad I did it!
Accent Color
The creamy amber color you see as an accent color in the bathroom, kind of just worked out that way. I didn’t plan it, but the sink vanity top I was planning to repaint a faux white marble, but when we decided to hang the amber glass sconce up above it, and then the creamy towels we had in a previous bathroom, it all just came together and matched. And speaking of the antique glass sconce, we found that in our attic when we bought the home, and I have been waiting to find the perfect spot for it, I love it in the guest bathroom! I was also on a mission to find the perfect mirror for under the light fixture above the toilet. We bought two, but neither of them felt right, and I remembered my friend Monica makes mirrors out of old windows. I thought that would be perfect! I called her up and she happened to have one already made that was the exact size and color, it also had that creamy amber color to it, and it was just meant to be! It brings more light into the bathroom and a touch of old which y’all know I love! It also had little hooks on the bottom that I thought would be perfect to hang towels on, pretty and functional! The old ladder that I also hung towels on was just an added touch of old, we picked that up from one of my favorite stores here in Summerville, Vintage South!
Before & After
That’s a Wrap!
So that’s it, folks! I hope you love it as much as we do! This has probably been the hardest renovation my husband and I have done so far, and I am so proud to say that we did 90% of it ourselves. We learned a lot and accomplished what we set out to do, and we are ecstatic with the results of our hard work! Now onto the next project…
